Inherently stable descending flight of a tailless flapping wing micro air vehicle by upward wing elevation

چکیده

Maneuverability of flapping wing fliers inevitably goes with inherent system instability. Inherent instability means that systems require a flight controller and these vehicles are prone to crashing. This work proposes design feature stabilize the descent aerial vehicle. The vehicle is based on KUlibrie, nano robot under development at KU Leuven. A computational study indicates upwardly elevated wings provide inherently stable descending flight. performs free starting from different initial conditions. dynamics display convergence towards limit cycle. Wing elevation center gravity position determine pitch roll stiffness respect vertical climb. same effects also destabilize climbing

Resonance Based Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicle

Flapping wing micro air vehicles have many possible applications and have therefore been the subject of extensive research. The Atalanta project aims to develop a fully autonomous, 10 cm wingspan, flapping wing sensor platform. The structure is based on a fully compliant resonating structure with passive wing pitching. Several design improvements have taken place since the last report. Introduc...

Kinematics Optimization for a Flapping-wing Micro Air Vehicle

A flight-dynamics oriented simulation model of a flapping-wing Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) has been developed. This concept is based on flapping flight performed in nature by insects or hummingbirds. An optimization of the flapping kinematics of the wing has been led, in order to maximize the mean lift and thus the payload. A neural network has been designed to reproduce the function shape of the w...

Flight Dynamic Stability of a Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicle in Hover

This paper discusses a methodology of analyzing the flight dynamic stability of a flapping wing Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) in hover. The flexible flapping wings are modeled by a strain-based geometrically nonlinear beam formulation, coupled with an empirical aerodynamic formulation for load calculation on the wings surfaces. Wing flapping kinematics is described using a set of Euler angles. Nonlin...

Control of Flapping-Wing Micro Air Vehicles

Most birds and many insects use periodic wing motion to propel themselves and maneuver. Most conventional flying machines are propelled by rotating machinery, achieve lift through rotating or fixed wings, and are controlled through the production of steady aerodynamic forces produced by rotors or movable wings. Many of the first powered flapping-wing micro air vehicles (MAVs) effectively replac...

UPDATE ON FLAPPING WING MICRO AIR VEHICLE RESEARCH Ongoing work to Develop a Flapping Wing, Crawling “Entomopter”

An electromechanical multimode (flying/crawling) insect is being developed by Robert Michelson and his design team at the Georgia Tech Research Institute. The project has received initial IRAD funding from the Georgia Institute of Technology. The mechanical insect, known as an “Entomopter” is based around a new development called a Reciprocating Chemical Muscle (RCM) which is capable of generat...
